A Day of Pamper in Honor of Our Military

On Saturday, December 1, the students of the Kennesaw, GA, school will show their appreciation for military personnel and their families by participating in Day of Pamper, an event to honor the troops and their families from the Dobbins Air Force base in Smyrna, GA.
“We wanted to connect with the local military base and offer services to show our gratitude,” said Vanessa King, Executive Director of the Kennesaw school.
Over 20 students from the Kennesaw school will arrive at the U.S. Air Force base at 10:00 a.m. to offer free facials and manicures. “The students all agreed that they wanted to donate their service and time,” noted King.
The event was inspired by student Kenta Sands, a former U.S. Army E4 Specialist who had been stationed in Korea for two and a half years, and had a first hand account of just how forgotten military troops feel during the holiday season.
Sands and his fellow students decided to initiate the Day ofPamper after discussing how they could brighten the holidays and show their appreciation for area military personnel and their families.
The students began their efforts by writing several thank you cards and well wishes in celebration of Thanksgiving to the troops overseas. “I’m happy that my fellow peers pulled together to support our troops,” said Sands.
We will keep you posted on the Day of Pamper event, which is sure to be a success and a welcomed day of beauty for the troops and their families at the Dobbins Air Force base.

Beauty Pros Deliver Messages to Capital Hill; Ask for Equitable Taxation and Access to Education

Beauty professionals from across the country recently spent a day on Capitol Hill to educate legislators and key staffers about the importance of their constituency and the needs of their small business community.

During the Professional Beauty Federation’s (PBF) 8th Annual “Welcome to Our World” educational event, representatives from independent and chain salons, day spas, cosmetology schools, beauty product manufacturers, distributors and the industry’s associations first met with their own legislators to educate them about the professional salon industry’s reach and importance in their own Congressional districts.

Later that day, they continued the conversations during demonstrations of hair cuts, mini manicures, chair massages, makeup application and other services rendered in the nation’s hundreds of thousands of salons every day across the country.

Two issues of immediate importance to the cosmetology industry are fairness in taxation and access to cosmetology education. H.R. 3016, the Small Business Tax Equalization and Compliance Act, would make it possible for salon owners to claim a tax credit for the FICA taxes they must now pay on their employees’ tips, a benefit that restaurant owners already receive. The legislation will also improve income reporting within the industry.

In regard to education, the PBF thanked Congress for enacting positive provisions for students attending clock hour institutions of higher education in the Higher Education Reconciliation Act portion of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 and College Cost Reduction Act of 2007.

Those provisions will enable cosmetology students to enter the workforce sooner, with less potential indebtedness, enabling them to enter a job market where demand for qualified applicants exceeds the supply by more than three-to-one.

The cosmetology industry supports efforts in Congress to include year-round Pell eligibility for all students, and elimination of, or significant modification to, the 90-10 rule, in the final HEA legislation.

“This important event brings an entire $60 billion industry to Capitol Hill in just one day,” explains Eric Schwartz, president of the Professional Beauty Federation.

“It provides the perfect forum for our legislators to learn about important small-business and education issues that affect millions of their constituents, while they enjoy the services that are performed by 1.6 million licensed professionals hundreds of times a day in hundreds of salons in each of their districts.”

Founded in 1999, the PBF represents the political interests of the Professional Beauty Industry. Members include the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the International Salon/Spa Business Network (ISBN), the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), OPI Products, Inc., Great Clips, JC Penney Salons and Regis Corporation.
The PBF represents 27,000 independent and chain salons, which employ 270,000 licensed beauty professionals, who see more than 400 million client visits per year. PBF membership also includes 1,200 cosmetology schools, 80,000 cosmetology students, 400 product distributors and 700 manufacturers of products used and sold in professional salons. Hair Design School Grad Making News with Salons

Pamela Roberts, a 1979 Hair Design School graduate, was featured in the local Oldham County newspaper for her two notable salons she and her daughter, Regina Embry, own and operate together in Kentucky, Hair Classics and Hair Classics II. The article notes that Roberts and her daughter operate the only salons that treat African American hair in the county.

Roberts, an Oldham, KY, resident saw the need for stylists with familiarity treating African American hair. With her experience and education behind her, she opened her first salon, Hair Classics in La Grange, KY, in 1981. “No one in the area had opened an African American hair salon. Mine is the only one in the area,” she said. Her daughter, also a stylist, manages her second salon, Hair Classics II, in Crestwood, KY, which recently opened.

“Growing up as a teen, I was doing everyone’s hair and before you knew it I was doing everyone’s hair in the neighborhood,” Roberts laughed about how she got her start in cosmetology. “I just had a passion for it. I liked communicating with people,” she noted.

Roberts two salons are located at 606 Crystal Place, Suite 11 in La Grange and 7600 East Orchard Grass Boulevard in Crestwood.

FirstChair Magazine Features Empire’s 2007 National Competition

Modern Salon’s FirstChair magazine editor, Melissa Hill, featured Empire Education Group and referenced Empire’s National Competition and Hair Show, of which she attended in 2007.

Hill’s “editor’s letter” column in the front of the magazine described her experience as a guest at Empire Education Group’s 2007 National Competition in which she stated:
“Students from the Empire network gathered for two days of education, competition and celebration of a great year. The best part of the weekend was the competition, with a student from each school chosen to compete in men’s hair cuts, women’s hair cuts, women’s updos and nails, all performed on mannequins in one hour. The hair was incredibly impressive and creative, but the energy and excitement for this industry was what impressed me the most. The picture is me (I’m buried somewhere amid the pompoms) with Frank Schoeneman, president of Empire, and a group of the most spirited students. I hope to go back again next year!”

Empire Education Group

Empire Beauty Schools has completed the merger of its accredited cosmetology schools with the accredited cosmetology schools of Regis Corporation (NYSE:RGS), the global leader in the $150 billion hair care industry, to form Empire Education Group. The new company is the largest beauty school operator in North America. As a result of this transaction, Empire Beauty Schools owns 51% majority interest in the newly formed EEG, Inc., with Franklin K. Schoeneman, chairman and CEO, remaining the primary stockholder, and Regis owns a 49 percent minority interest. The transaction closed August 1, 2007. Previously, on April 19, 2007, the companies announced the signing of a definitive agreement to merge their cosmetology schools.

Franklin K. Schoeneman, chairman and chief executive officer of Empire Beauty Schools, will retain the same titles and responsibilities for Empire Education Group. Paul D. Finkelstein, chairman and chief executive officer of Regis Corporation, will hold a position on Empire Education Group’s board of directors.

“We are delighted to welcome these fine schools into our family,” says Schoeneman, whose family has owned and operated some of the most successful cosmetology schools in North America for more than 50 years. “We are now focused on adopting best practices from across the system to ensure the best education possible for our students, as well as the fastest enrollment process, so they can begin pursuing their dreams as quickly as possible.”

The merger expands the presence of both companies across North America and brings greater economies of scale to their shared operation of cosmetology schools. The new privately-held company will own and operate 87 schools in 18 states. They include A Cut Above (Indiana); Arthur Angelos (Rhode Island); Artistic Beauty Colleges (Arizona, Colorado); Blaine the Schools (Massachusetts); Chic University of Cosmetology (Michigan); Concorde Academy (New Jersey); Empire Beauty Schools (Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia); European Academy (New Jersey); The Hair Design School (Kentucky); Martin’s College of Cosmetology (Wisconsin); Natural Motion Institute (New Jersey); Pierre’s School of Cosmetology (Maine) and Scot Lewis Schools (Minnesota).

As a result of the merger, Empire Education Group has already added 136 new positions nationwide, with 93 located at its Pottsville, PA headquarters.

The schools’ first joint national effort will be Empire Education Group’s National Day of Beauty on Saturday, October 13, when each school will conduct a cut-a-thon and hold fundraisers for KidsPeace, the national beneficiary of Empire Education Group’s fundraising efforts.
